The Thunderbird

I wrote this poem because I really liked the poem "Mudville," but wanted to write something happy. So...that's where this one came from. I also wrote one for my high school's mascot, but I don't know what happened to it. But it's almost exactly the same. Except it's with a teal falcon.

Behind twenty points

Blood covering the grass

Sweat trickling down their foreheads

They had to make that pass

The band played their lungs out

The crowd waved their hands in the air

Our team was getting slaughered

Their heart just wasn't there

The coach called a time out

He wanted them to keep on playing

Told them to try harder

And listen to what he was saying

Out of the blue, a little girl cried out

"Look momma, look! Look at it fly!"

A red bird circled the field

And caught everyone's eye

Everyone went quiet--this was quite unusual

It started to glide, then landed on the field

It pecked at the grass, made a small noise

Like it had no idea it made the game yield

Somebody yelled out, "Is that a Thunderbird?"

But, that was impossible--that couldn't be true

Still, it gave the team a new hope

As they watched, away the bird flew

The team flooded back on to the field

Their heart was in it, and all could tell

They got closer and closer, until they were ahead

And they all did very well

They killed the other team, and won, it was great

Nobody saw that red bird ever again

Sometimes they wonder if they all imagined it

Could it have really helped them win?
